Binge Eating Disorder: A Non-Diet Workshop for Health Professionals
With Janet Lowndes and Louise Adams
Binge Eating Disorder (BED) represents a large proportion of all eating disorder diagnoses (47%), however has only recently been included in the DSM-5. It is a largely misunderstood and under-recognised condition, and many people experiencing BED avoid seeking help due to a lack of understanding of their experience by health professionals.
This workshop will be facilitated by two psychologists with significant experience providing therapy for people across the Eating Disorders, including those with BED. Louise and Janet are experienced Non-Diet and Health at Every Size® practitioners, offering therapy which is size inclusive and respectful of diversity and the individuals personal experience.
The workshop will explore:
the history of BED as a diagnostic category
BED assessment and diagnostic issues
the evidence base for BED treatment, including CBT-e, DBT and trauma informed care
issues with medical management of BED
The Non-Diet framework for understanding and treating BED will be elucidated, including the role of nutritional restriction in BED development and maintenance. We will also explore concerns with a weight focus (or weight loss focus) in BED treatment, as well as exploring the impact of weight bias in BED research and treatments.
The impact of internalised weight stigma on both practitioner and patient will also be explored.
Clinicians who attend this comprehensive workshop will discover how to incorporate Non-Diet principles into their treatment of people with BED. Through case studies, role plays and personal reflection exercises, clinicians will have the opportunity to develop a person-centred, evidence based, social-justice informed approach to their work.
This workshop is suitable for all health professionals interested in developing their understanding of BED.
Louise Adams is a clinical psychologist and the Vice President of HAES Australia. She has 20 years clinical experience working in private practice in Sydney, Australia. She is also the founder of UNTRAPPED, an online program for people with eating and body weight concerns.
Louise currently works privately, consulting for private practices in Sydney and online. She is the host of the non-diet podcast, All Fired Up!, and has extensive experience speaking to the media about non-diet issues. Louise has extensive clinical experience working with people suffering from eating disorders, particularly Binge Eating Disorder and disordered eating caused by dieting or the pursuit of ‘health’.
Louise uses evidence based techniques through a non-diet lens, incorporating cognitive behaviour therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and compassion based mindfulness, to achieve lasting change and a sense of empowerment in her clients.
Louise has published two books. The Non-Diet Approach Guidebook for Psychologists and Counsellors (2014, co-authored with Fiona Willer, APD) is a professional manual which guides psychologists and counsellors in the application of the non-diet approach. Her second book, Mindful Moments (2016) is for the general public, and teaches people how to apply self-compassion based mindfulness techniques in their everyday lives.
Louise has a special interest and expertise in weight issues from a social justice perspective. Louise aims to educate all of her clients about the cruel trap of popular dieting approaches, which ultimately set people up to fail in the long term. Louise is determined to make a difference in changing our society’s perceptions about dieting, weight loss, and body image. She is pro body diversity and believes that people can be happy and experience health improvements at a range of sizes.
Janet Lowndes is the Director and Principal Psychologist at Mind Body Well, a private practice in Melbourne providing outpatient therapies for people with Eating Disorders and concerns about weight and wellbeing - from a Non-Diet, Health at Every Size® perspective.
Janet has over 25 years experience in therapeutic practice, inspired by neuropsychotherapy, embodiment, and social justice perspectives which empower those seeking treatment, and aim to address systemic inequalities and barriers to care.
Janet has provided counselling to assist people with Eating Disorders for over 20 years. Her interest in the psychology of food, eating and body image began when she was working in the youth health field, where she learned about Eating Disorders from many of her clients. Janet also worked closely for a few years with Dr. Rick Kausman, the author of ‘If Not Dieting then What’, assisting in his training programs for Health Professionals about a non-dieting approach to the psychology of food and eating.
Janet’s approach is one which emphasises wellbeing rather than weight, focussing on healthy processes or lifestyle change, rather than being preoccupied with outcomes such as size or weight.
Janet is an experienced trainer and supervisor, providing professional support to many professionals working in the Eating Disorder field.
